Pillican, a new medtech startup, is innovating pill-swallowing solutions for kids – with a simple solution to a real problem.
This week at Republikken’s Community Breakfast, we were treated to an inspiring talk by Jakob and Rasmus, the minds behind Pillican, an innovative medtech startup. Their project? Aimed at solving a surprisingly common issue—helping children swallow pills more easily. What started as an idea during their time in the prestigious Novo Nordisk Foundation’s Biomedical Design Fellowship quickly grew into a full-blown mission.
A Simple Solution to a Real Problem
During their fellowship, Jakob, an anesthesiologist, and Rasmus, a graphic designer, joined forces with a shared ambition to address a genuine medical need. They observed a simple but impactful problem in children’s hospitals: young patients struggle to swallow pills, especially when sick. Their solution? A specialized drinking device that makes pill-swallowing feel as natural as taking a sip of water.
This device isn’t just for kids, though. Jakob and Rasmus have their sights set on adults who also face challenges with pills, creating a potentially transformative solution in the healthcare market.
From Fellowship to Founders at Pillican
Armed with a Danish public grant from Innovation Fund Denmark, they officially launched Pillican in September. The grant provided essential startup support, enabling them to dive into product development and prototyping. Today, they’re building data-driven machines that analyze the mechanics of swallowing, ensuring the device works seamlessly across ages and user types.
Looking to the Future at Pillican
While the road ahead is challenging, Jakob and Rasmus are motivated. They’ve connected with healthcare professionals and pediatric networks in Denmark and beyond, building a strong foundation for success. Their next steps involve refining their prototype and navigating the rigorous regulatory landscape.
With such drive and creativity, Pillican’s journey is bound to inspire, and we can’t wait to see where it leads.
