This Thursday, Community Breakfast took us far beyond Copenhagen. Out into open waters, strong winds, and a story that stayed with us long after the coffee ran out. We met Mikkel. Doctor, sailor, and founder of Oceans of Hope.
At first, it sounds almost unreal. Sailing around the world with people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. But as Mikkel shared his journey, it quickly became clear. This is not just about sailing. It is about hope.
When an Idea Finds You
Mikkel’s background is in medicine. A neurologist working with patients diagnosed with MS.
Every day, he helped people manage a disease that cannot be cured. And often, he saw something else. A loss of hope.
One conversation changed everything. Sitting with a former blacksmith who had lost belief in his future, Mikkel said something simple. Maybe you should go sailing again.
And in that moment, the idea arrived. Not slowly, but all at once. He would sail around the world with a crew of people living with MS.
A Boat, a Mission, and a Lot of Courage
Within a year, the project became a reality. Funding was secured. A boat was bought. A team was built. And in 2014, they set sail from Copenhagen.
Over one and a half years, more than 100 people from 16 countries joined the journey. Six people with MS were on board at all times. Not as passengers, but as crew. Sailing the boat. Standing watch. Working together.
Because that was the point. You cannot remove the disease. But you can change the story around it.
The Power of Community at Sea
Life on a boat is simple. And intense. There is no room for ego. No space for competition. Everyone depends on each other.
And that changes something.
Mikkel described it as creating a space where people can empower themselves. Not by being told they can. But by experiencing it.
The results speak for themselves. People returned home stronger. More confident. Some even got their jobs and everyday lives back.
Not cured. But changed.
What Comes Next
Oceans of Hope is still sailing today. But Mikkel is already looking ahead.
His next vision is to create a floating folk high school. A space for young people to step away from pressure, expectations, and uncertainty. And instead, experience trust, responsibility, and community.
Because maybe that is what we all need sometimes. A reminder that we are not meant to do everything alone.
More Than a Journey
Mikkel did not just share a story about sailing. He shared a perspective.
That even in uncertainty, something meaningful can be built. That community can change how we see ourselves. And that sometimes, the wildest ideas are the ones worth following.
Welcome to Republikken, Mikkel.
